General Notes: In a Document received from Jane Elizabeth Marshall in July 2016, was the following:-
Leicestershire Mercury 20 February 1847
Obituary Edward Pollard
On the 10th inst., at Evedon , near Sleaford, Lincolnshire, at the house of his son, the Rev. Edward Pollard, Mr Edward Pollard, aged 72. He was the son of the late venerable Thomas Pollard, of Melton Mowbray, by a former wife. Mr Pollard in early life was a confidential domestic in the Wellesley Pole family for many years, but was subsequently house-steward and bailiff to Mrs Cholmeley, at Easton Hall, near Colsterworth, and late of Tunbridge Wells, for about twenty years. His genuine frankness of manner and kind disposition gained him the esteem and respect of all with whom he was acquainted. Mr P was descended from one of the most ancient families in Leicester, and was supposed to be the rightful heir to an immensely large property in London said to have been left by a Nathaniel Pollard, glover to Queen Anne: and trying to obtain which cost him (and other branches of the family) a considerable deal of money, but was ultimately nonsuited by not proving his pedigree.
No connection has been found to the the glovemaker Pollards of Coventry and Rugby. The following article is probably more relevant with regard to his ancestry (though the links back to Edward 1701 have not been traced yet):
Stamford Mercury 3 Jan 1834
If the descendants of EDWARD POLLARD (by Susannah his wife), born at Branston, in the county of Leicester, in the year 1701, will apply to EDWARD POLLARD, of Gunby, they may hear of something to their advantage, by addressing as above; all letters post paid. All persons having any demand against the said Edward Pollard to apply as above. Gunby, near Spilsby, Jan 1st 1834.
The Wellesley-Poles referred to were William and Catherine Wellesley-Pole who lived at 3 Savile Row London between 1800-1845. William was Master of the Mint and became Lord Maryborough in 1822 after which he moved to a house called Fern Hill in Windsor and this was probably when Edward Pollard moved on to the Cholmeley household at Easton Hall. William succeeded as the 3rd Earl of Mornington when his brother Richard Wellesley died in 1842 but he is probably more recognisable as the older brother of Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington.
Easton Hall was the residence of the Cholmeley family for many generations though it was demolished and shipped to America in 1902. It was located near Colsterworth and Spilsby in Lincolnshire near the Leicestershire border. Gunby, Edward Pollard's address in the 1834 article above is not far from there so he probably lived and/or retired there.
