William was the first-born son having been born in 1818 in Barrow Rutland though he was preceded by his sister Mary born in 1817 presumably also in Barrow though both were baptised in Cottesmore Rutland. William is first encountered living with the family of Louisa Provost in Walsoken Norfolk where Louisa ' s mother Ann was a schoolmistress At this time William was a wool merchant and he and Louisa married in 1842 in Wisbech In 1851 Louisa and her two boys are in Wisbech St Peter and, though William is away from home, Louisa's status is given as accountant's wife. By 1861 things had taken off and the family are at the Old Cross Hertford St Andrew, next to the 'Waggon and Horses" an old coaching inn (and now an antiques shop).
William who married into the influential Provost family of Gedney Hill, became a successful newspaper owner and editor in Hertford and moved in quite different circles to his craftsman brother Thomas. Yes, old William was what we would term now socially mobile, hobnobbing with other newspaper editors and authors such that his children and even sisters got to mingle with this rather erudite crowd . He also appeared to have maintained some degree of contact with his London based younger brother Robert, a Linen draper.

Noted events in his life were:

• Occupation: a Newspaper Proprietor, Hertfordshire England.

General Notes: In a Document received from Jane Elizabeth Marshall in June 2016, she included the following:-
Thomas' parents are named as Robert Pollard, schoolteacher, and Mary (rather than Elizabeth). This is almost certainly a transcription error. There was no other Robert Pollard, schoolteacher, in the area at that time and family anecdotes (John Roberts, in litt) definitely place him here.
1841: Barrowby Lincolnshire. Saddler.
1851: Sutton St Mary. Saddler.
1861. Sutton St James, Broadgate. Saddler & Harness Maker.
1871-1891: Guyhirn, Wisbech St Mary. Master Saddler.
1901: Moulton. With daughter Katherine.
In a further Document received from Jane Elizabeth late in July 2016m she included the following:
Thomas was a harness-maker and had a workshop in the village and he was born in Tydd St Mary to Robert Pollard, a schoolmaster according to his marriage certificate. Sure enough there was a Robert Pollard born in 1787 in Melton Mowbray and he was still the headmaster of the Tydd St Mary school when I found him in the census His wife was absent and, according to Thomas ' baptism record, she was called Mary but after much time wasted searching for her I realised that this must have been some sort of transcription error. She was actually called Elizabeth and with this information I was able to find her in both the 1841 and 1851 censuses and learned that she was born in Exton in Rutland which lead to me finding their marriage and that she was called Elizabeth Stanger. This knowledge came quite late and for many years I struggled to piece together Robert and Elizabeth's family as Thomas was most definitely the odd one out. Most of his siblings apart from one sister, were born in Rutland both before and after Thomas ' birth in Lincolnshire. Then there was the anomaly of his mother being named as Mary which did make me wonder if he was illegitimate but Sophia Amelia his sister who was also born in Tydd, had Elizabeth as mother so I think Thomas ' entry was just an error as I mentioned above.
