General Notes: In a Document received from Jane Elizabeth Marshall in June 2016, she included the following:-
College Prizes, Kings College London. The Pollard Bursary The bursary was established in 1965 under the will of the Reverend Harry Postlethwaite Pollard AKC of Burystead, Wilshamstead, Bedford, who bequeathed £2,714 to the Corporation of King's College London to form an endowment fund of which the income shall be paid to or applied at the discretion of the Dean of King's College London for the benefit of a Theological student who shall be preparing for Holy Orders to relieve their financial needs either by a grant for the purchase of books or by such other means as shall be judged suitable by the said Dean of King's College.
THE HARRY AND KATIE POLLARD TRUST
THE OBJECT OF THE HARRY AND KATIE POLLARD TRUST IS TO APPLY THE
INCOME FOR RELIEF OF CLERGY WIDOWS AND THE UNMARRIED DAUGHTERS OF
DECEASED CLERGY, AGED OVER 50 YEARS.
In a subsequent Document, received in July 2016, Jane Elizabeth included:-
He attended Kings College London and later became the very popular vicar of Wilshamstead (Wilstead) in Bedfordshire and is referenced a number of times in their local history publication "Wilshampstead: Homestead of Friends" by Christine Papworth and Gessie Della Ripa. In one entry he is referred to affectionately as Harry 'Happy' Postlethwaite Pollard and was obviously a popular member of the community.
AND, Jane Elizabeth added,
He was thus an enthusiastic local historian and obviously a respected scholar. On his death he left a bequest to Kings College and founded what was known as the Pollard Bursary, a grant to help theological students through the course of their studies. I don't think a vicar's stipend would have accounted for that. Harry had indeed received a significant inheritance from his father who was after all a bank clerk. I suspect his wife, Katie Neale, had received an inheritance from her father too, a wealthy draper who lived at Bayley Hall in Hertford. Katie's will in 1952 made provision for a charitable trust originally for the relief of widows and unmarried daughters of the clergy. The trusts have been combined and a charity known as The Katie and Harry Pollard Trust is still currently active.

Henry married Katie NEALE [104894], daughter of Samuel John Thompson NEALE [104895] and Louisa ELMS [104896], in 1910 in Hertford Hertfordshire England. Katie was born in 1876 in Hertford Hertfordshire England, was baptised on 15 Mar 1876 in Hertford Hertfordshire England, and died on 9 Nov 1958 in Bedford Bedfordshire England at age 82.

Mary married Percy Elwyn ELLIOTT [104897], son of Daniel ELLIOTT [104898] and Emma MATTHEWS [104899], in 1872 in Hertford Hertfordshire England. Percy was born in 1846 in Camberwell Surrey England and died on 1 Dec 1916 at age 70.

• Residence: at Nightingale Road, 1881, Hitchin Hertfordshire England.

Author:Lilian Elwyn Elliott; Catherine Markham
Publisher:1917. Edition/Format: Print book :
Manuscript Archival Material : English
Database:WorldCat Summary:Informs Mrs. Markham that she will be at their house tomorrow evening.
It is likely that Lilian and the Reverend had parted company and that Lilian was a bit of a free spirit who found her soulmate in Thomas Athol Joyce.
She died at the same hotel in Falmouth as her brother in 1963 so one must assume they resided there together in their 'twilight years', both of them living to the age of 88 years.
Stephen obviously had a special place at Penmere because of its naval connections and may have lived there before the war.

Lilian married Rev., Ernest Charles SUMMERS [104902] on 18 Aug 1908 in Hemel Hempstead Hertfordshire England. Ernest was born in 1880 in Ivinghoe Buckinghamshire England.

General Notes: In a Document received from Jane Elizabeth Marshall in June 2016, she included the following:-
Thomas Athol Joyce OBE (4 August 1878 - 3 January 1942) was a British anthropologist. He became an acknowledged expert on American and African Anthropology at the British Museum. He led expeditions to excavate Mayan sites in British Honduras. He wrote articles for the Encyclopedia Britannica .......and was the President of both the Royal Anthropological Institute and the Anthropological section of the British Association.
Joyce was born in Camden Town in London in 1878. His father was a newspaper editor and he went on to Hertford College, Oxford where he obtained an M.A. in 1902 and joined the British Museum. He served as an assistant to Charles Hercules Read for whom he gathered ethnographic artefacts by collaborating with others who travelled abroad, like Emil Torday who went to the Belgian Congo.

Joyce was divorced by his wife, Lilian (born Dayrell) in 1925 and his wife remarried the following year. Joyce's second partner was the travel writer Lilian Elwyn Elliott.
Elliott had married before and no evidence has been found of her divorce or a formal marriage ceremony with Joyce.
In 1927 Joyce eventually travelled abroad when he led an annual expedition team, including members of the Royal Geographic Society, to British Honduras. In 1927
Joyce published a book on Mayan art where he proposed that Mexican relief sculpture exceeded that of the quality of Egypt of Mesopotamia. He also made the claim that given that they had not discovered the potter's wheel they had created very high quality ceramics.
His wife came with him in 1929 and she changed her interests, spending the next ten years in complementary studies and writing. Elliott, Joyce's partner still took a great interest in anthropology even after Joyce died.
------------------------------------
Joyce published a report on the investigations at Lubaantum, British Honduras in 1926. Adrian Digby, Lilian's 2nd cousin and also of the BM, had something to say on the BM crystal skulls and Belize (q.v.) and surely must have been aware of his own connection to Joyce.
