9. Walter RIDDELL 14th Laird of Riddell [55716] (George⁵, John⁴, James³, Unknown², Quintin¹) was born about 1508 in Melrose Roxburghshire Scotland and died about 1588 aged about 80.

General Notes: In an e-Mail received from Don MacArthur in October, 2017. he stated,
James was followed by John, whose son George was his heir apparent in 1533 (GD150/1401), but dead by 1545 (RMS III 3190), when John passed over £10 of land to his grandson Walter, most probably at the time of his marriage to Mariota Hoppringle,
and, in a Document received from Gail Riddell in October 2017, she included the following:
GD45/16/2782 Charter a me by Walter Riddell of that ilk with consent of Marion Hoppringle, his spouse, to Andrew Riddell, their son, and Agnes Ramsay,daughter of George Ramsay of Dalhousy, futurespouse of said Andrew, of 8 marklands of Clerklandis with the lands of Bowiamylne in terms of a marriage contract dated 1 February 1566/7 6 Feb 1566/1567.
GD45/17/21 Discharge by Walter Riddell of that ilk to George Ramsay of Dalhoussye of the remaining tocher of Agnes Ramsay, his daughter, spouse of Andrew Riddell, son of said Walter, 11 Feb. 1566/1567.
Inherited from his grandfather John as his father had died prior to inheriting - See Page Liv 'British Baronetcy' Vol 3 Part 3 by Playfair.

Walter married Mariotta HOPRINGLE [55717], daughter of Sir James HOPRINGLE Kt. of Smallholm & Galashiels [112602] and Mary BORTHWICK [112603], about 1543. Mariotta was born circa 1503 and died after 1567. Another name for Mariotta was Marion PRINGLE.

Children from this marriage were:

+ 10 M    i. Walter RIDDELL [55714] was born about 1520 and died in 1592 aged about 72.

+ 11 M    ii. Robert RIDDELL [112581] was born circa 1531 in Melrose Roxburghshire Scotland and died on 4 May 1581 aged about 50.

   12 M    iii. William RIDDELL [112772] was born about 1533 in Melrose Roxburghshire Scotland.

   13 F    iv. RIDDELL [112773] was born about 1535 in Melrose Roxburghshire Scotland.

+ 14 M    v. Andrew RIDDELL 15th Laird of Riddell [55711] was born about 1550 in Melrose Roxburghshire Scotland and died on 4 Mar 1632 in Selkirk Selkirkshire Scotland aged about 82.
