19. John STANGER [85228] (John6, James2, John1) was born about 1802 in Castor Cambridgeshire England and was baptised on 18 Apr 1802 in Castor Cambridgeshire England.

General Notes: In Keith Martin's Biographical Notes, he states:
John Stanger and others' appear on the Tithe Roll for Castor, as living in a cottage and garden belonging to the Hon George Fitzwilliam ('thearchive' website, database reference P 1025, transcribed by Catherine Keating, 2003. The property, Catherine Keating reports, was 'the area of 6 Church Hill'). There is a mystery here in that in the 1841 Census, there is no mention of John. His children were then living together with William as head of household. It had been assumed that both John and Mary had died by 1841 but his name appears six years later as an occupier of rented property. No other John Stanger has been identified of the right age.
A possible death has been found for John Stanger in the first quarter of 1843 (1843, Jan-Mar, Peterborough 15 245) but this does not explain his absence from the 1841 Census

John married Mary Anne GROOM [85232] [MRIN: 28258] on 4 Dec 1820 in Castor Cambridgeshire England.

Children from this marriage were:

+ 31 M    i. William STANGER [85233] was born about 1821 in Castor Cambridgeshire England, was baptised on 11 Mar 1821 in Castor Cambridgeshire England, and died on 16 Mar 1888 aged about 67.

32 F    ii. Sarah Alice STANGER [85234] was born about 1822 in Castor Cambridgeshire England and was baptised on 23 Jan 1822 in Castor Cambridgeshire England.

33 F    iii. Anne STANGER [85235] was born about 1824 in Castor Cambridgeshire England and was baptised on 17 May 1824 in Castor Cambridgeshire England.

34 M    iv. Henry STANGER [85236] was born about 1826 in Castor Cambridgeshire England and was baptised on 15 Jan 1826 in Castor Cambridgeshire England.

+ 35 F    v. Lydia STANGER [85237] was born about 1828 in Castor Cambridgeshire England and was baptised in 1828 in Castor Cambridgeshire England.

24. William Peck STANGER [85251] (William13, James2, John1) was born about 1810 in Castor Cambridgeshire England, was baptised on 28 Jan 1810 in Castor Cambridgeshire England, and died after 1881.

General Notes: In his Biographical Summary, Keith Martin states:
William's baptismal record shows his name as 'William-peck' I do not know the meaning or reason for this.
No positive record found so far for 1841. One census return gives a William, aged 31, an 'ag lab', living with Isabella, aged 30, presumably his wife, and with a son John, aged 8 (HO 107 / 803 7).
The 1851 census for Lutton shows a William, born in Castor about 1810, unmarried. He was living in the household of Henry Bodger, blacksmith, and his occupation is given as 'blacksmith journeyman'.
The 1861 census shows William at 51 living in Lutton, about 10 miles south of Castor. He was then married to Sarah, aged 40, who was born in Lutton. William was described as 'cottager of 12 acres'. His daughter-in-law, Anne Bird, aged 20, was living with them. Having a daughter-in-law with a surname that is not Stanger does not make sense. Perhaps this was Sarah's second marriage, perhaps BIRD having been her first married name. 'Daughter-in-law' should perhaps be 'stepdaughter'.
In 1871, William was 60 and still described as 'cottager farming 13 acres'. Sarah was still with him.
The 1881 census shows the head of household as 'William P Stanger' and now farming 14 acres at the age of 70. As well as Sarah, the household on census night comprised Ernest Pearson, 9 and Jessie Pearson, 4, both visitors, and Georgina Hedditch, 25, boarder, school mistress.

William married Isabella [89560] [MRIN: 29842]. Marriage status: unknown. Isabella was born about 1810.

The child from this marriage was:

36 M    i. John STANGER [89561] was born about 1833 in Castor Cambridgeshire England.

William next married Sarah [85266] [MRIN: 28266] after 1851. Sarah was born about 1821 in Lutton Cambridgeshire England and died after 1881.

30. James Nichols STANGER [85257] (Francis14, James2, John1) was born from 1818 to 1819 in Castor Cambridgeshire England and was baptised on 3 Jan 1819 in Castor Cambridgeshire England.

General Notes: In his Biographical Summary, Keith Martin states:
James appears in the 1841 Census, aged 20, living with his parents. No occupation is given.
No record found for 1851.
In 1861 Census, James is described as a cordwainer, with his wife and with his three eldest children shown as scholars, at a house at 'side of Wandsford (sic) Road'. No record of his marriage has been found so far. Likely to have been in Warmington.
By 1871, addresses had appeared in Castor, and James lived at 7 Main Street. The term 'cordwainer' has been dropped in favour of 'shoemaker', a trade which his son William was also practising.
In 1881, at the same address, all except the two youngest children, John Thomas and Kate, had left home. However, Ethel Wilfrid Stanger, their granddaughter, was living with them. She had been born in Peterborough about 1880. Whose child? This could be the child of William Lichfield (E9) and Jane.
In 1891, James, a widower, was living in Stamford Road, Castor. He had retired and still had Lucy Jane, John Thomas, Kate and Ethel living with him.

Noted events in his life were:

• Occupation: Cordwainer, Castor Cambridgeshire England.

James married Ann [85258] [MRIN: 28265] in Warmington Cambridgeshire England. Ann was born about 1822 in Warmington Cambridgeshire England.

General Notes: In his Biographical Summary, Keith Martin states:
Ann came from Warmington, about six mile SW of Castor. James had his mother's maiden name as his middle name. In view of the fact that James' and Ann's first son had the middle name 'Lichfield' I wondered if this was Ann's family name in Warmington. A quick search of census records does not support this, however.

Children from this marriage were:

37 F    i. Sarah Anne STANGER [85259] was born about 1847, was baptised on 31 Oct 1847, and died 4 Qtr 1864 in Uppingham Rutland England aged about 17.

+ 38 M    ii. William Lichfield STANGER [85260] was born about 1849 and was baptised on 30 Dec 1849.

39 F    iii. Lucy Jane STANGER [85261] was born about 1852 and was baptised on 29 Aug 1852.

General Notes: In his Biographical Notes, Keith Martin states:
Lucy Jane. She was described as 'scholar', aged 9 in the 1861 Census. She was still at home in 1871 with no occupation indicated.
In 1891, she was still living in the household with her father as head. Unmarried, her occupation was given as 'domestic servant'.

40 F    iv. Rebecca STANGER [85262] was born about 1858 and was baptised on 24 Jan 1858.

General Notes: In his Biographical Notes, Keith Martin states:
Rebecca. Although recorded in the 1861 Census, aged 3, she does not appear in the 1871 Census. In 1881, she was a housemaid at 19 Westgate, Peterborough, in the household of Thomas Walker, 84, a retired physician and his wife, Mary, 73 (RG11 /1596/ p4). This was at the time William (?second cousin once removed) was living in Westgate Street.
Possible marriage found in 1883 when she would have been 25 (2nd quarter, 1883, Peterborough 3b 190).

41 F    v. Mary Elizabeth STANGER [85263] was born about 1860 and was baptised on 10 Feb 1860.

General Notes: In his Biographical Notes, Keith Martin states:
Mary Elizabeth appears in both the 1861 and 1871 Censuses as living with her parents.
So far, no record of her in the 1881 Census.
The 1891 Census shows her 'Housemaid (Domestic Serv)' together with a butler and cook in the Manor House of Godfrey H Thornton, single, 34, 'living on his own means'. This was at Long Sutton, Hampshire, about seven miles west of Farnham, Surrey.

42 M    vi. John Thomas STANGER [85264] was born about 1862, was baptised on 21 Sep 1862, died in Nov 1917 aged about 55, and was buried on 21 Nov 1917 in Castor Cambridgeshire England. The cause of his death was a Branch falling from a Tree.

General Notes: In his Biographical Notes, Keith Martin states:
John Thomas was living with his parents in the 1871 Census, aged 8. In the 1901 Census, he was aged 37, single and living on Peterborough Road. He was described as 'groom (domestic)'.
In 1891, he was still living in the household with his father as head. Unmarried, his occupation was given as 'Gardener, domestic servant'.
He was killed in November 1917 by a branch falling from a tree. The event is recorded on his gravestone in Castor cemetery, a tribute from his younger sister, Kate.

43 F    vii. Kate STANGER [85265] was born about 1864, was baptised on 16 Nov 1864, died in Mar 1934 aged about 70, and was buried on 9 Mar 1934 in Castor Cambridgeshire England.

General Notes: In his Biographical Notes, Keith Martin states:
Kate was recorded in the 1871 Census as living with her parents.
In 1891, she was still living in the household with her father as head. Unmarried, her occupation was given as 'housekeeper'.
In 1901, she was single, aged 34, working as a laundress on her own account and living with John Thomas. She died in March 1934, aged 69 and is buried with her brother.
She is the last person I have found bearing the name Stanger to have been living in Castor.
