2. Howard Ulph SMITH [3514], son of Arthur John Ulph SMITH [3516] and Lucy Susan Doris HOWARD [3515], was born on 19 Jan 1932 in Wattlebrae Hospital Kalinga Brisbane Queensland Australia.
General Notes: A very uneventful (except for numerous illnesses) childhood saw him attend Virginia Primary School and Church of England Grammar School, E. Brisbane.
On leaving School he spent a brief period in an Engineering Apprenticeship, and an even briefer period helping his Parents on their Pineapple farm at Montville, North of Brisbane. Youthful restlessness caused him to obtain employment in the Northern Territory of Australia, firstly on Soudan Station as a Storeman/Book-keeper, thence for the next three years he was employed in a number of positions in Tenant Creek in the N.T. His range of employment included P.M.G. Linesman, Assistant Assayer and Assayer in a couple of Gold Mines, Enterprise & Nobles Knob. He was also employed as a Crane Driver at Peko and as a "Grease Monkey" in one of the local garages. On his return to Q'land he continued to follow the Motor trade in Palmwoods [his first Son was Born in Nambour] and Brisbane; and for a Year in Barcaldine, where his younger Son Gregory was born. Also when he and his Family moved on to Sydney in N.S.W in 1959, he continued to work in the Motor and Engineering trades. After operating a number of businesses the Family returned to Brisbane, shortly before the death of Howard's Father. In 1969 they travelled to England where they stayed for 4 years. In England he worked as a Purchasing Officer for two firms, in one of which he was responsible for Stores and Materials Control. The Family returned to Sydney, Australia in 1973. Howard was then employed as Purchasing Officer for Plessey Australia, and subsequently as Production "Trouble Shooter" for four years. During this time, he and his Wife, Margaret had been building up a Portfolio of Residential Properties until in 1977 they were both able to retire from their respective Employers and work full time in their own business. About this time they founded Howmeg Investments Pty. Limited, a Property Investment business. About the same time, Howard became a Licenced Builder. From that time onward their Efforts were directed into making the Business successful. Their younger Son Gregory and his Wife Fiona became a part of the Business in about 1980. The Business has provided for both Families since that time.
