Geoffrey Stanger, in his letter rec'd Aug.8,1989, gives the following "Resume" on John: John Smith 1745-1807 was a Farmer in a small way, probably on land at Tydd St.Giles. He was a Baptist, worshipped at the Meeting House at Long Sutton (Lincs.). In due course he became a Deacon. In about 1782, a disagreement arose in the congregation. Many of the members of this Church at Long Sutton accordingley withdrew and formed themselves into a seperate General Baptist Church at Tydd St.Giles. The new Baptist Congregation worshipped at John Smith's House where he preached to them. In 1793, John married Martha Frank of Gedney. In due course he was ordained as Minister on 7th April, 1795.
Somewhere about this time he built a new House, which incorporated a Meeting Hall for his Congregation. This building still exists although in a very dilapidated condition. (1988) Here, Martha gave birth to a Son, John (1794), a Daughter, Rebecca ( ), a Son Joseph (1799) and another Son, Samuel (1802).
The General Baptist Repository, Vol. 2 tells us that "on Saturday Jan. 24th, after a fortnight's illness, Mr. Smith, aged 62 years Pastor of the General Baptist Church , Tydd St.Giles, Cambs., finished his course. The Interrment was on the following Tuesday, when a discourse was delivered by Mr. Burgess (of Fleet) from Psalm 12, V.1 'Help Lord for the Godly Man ceaseth'; after which Mr. Jarrom of Wisbech suitably addressed the congregation over the remains of the deceased, which were then deposited in the middle aisle of the Chapel" Writing in 1884, the Son Samuel referred to "our Mother when she lived
at the Chapel House at Tydd" G.B.Stanger, AUG.8,1989. It is believed the "Smiths" originally came from Gedney in Lincs.

In a Journal kept by Harriette Anne Smith, his Granddaughter, Harriette said:-
Mr. John Smith [grandfather] died Jan. 24, 1807, aged 62 years. He was buried in his own Chapel, which he had built for the General Baptists of Tydd-St.Giles. Their children were John [my Father] Joseph, Rebecca and Samuel.

In an e-Mail received from Sandra Boudrou in February 2016, she include the following:-
A congregation of Baptists was established at Tydd St. Giles by 1782. John Smith, who kept the village shop in the house next the rectory field, founded the chapel in Broadgate, adjoining a house belonging to him, with an open-air baptistry for immersion. Smith was ordained in 1795, and two deacons were appointed at the same time. In 1796 the congregation numbered 15. It had increased to 28 in 1800. In 1817 there were 65 Baptists at Tydd St. Giles, Sutton St. James, and Fleet. Smith died in 1807, and was buried beside his chapel. He was succeeded by Mr. Pocklinton and James Smith. (fn. 63) <http://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/cambs/vol4/pp224-232> In 1851 there was a larger average attendance at the chapel than at the parish church, where the rector was non-resident. (fn. 64) <http://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/cambs/vol4/pp224-232> The chapel was discontinued in 1922 and the building sold.

John married HOLLINGSWORTH [3561] about 1770. HOLLINGSWORTH [3561] died about 0178.

General Notes: Martha's Marriage has been confirmed on the BOYD Register of Marriages. See note under Lidia HERBER. ...
If the Lidia connection is correct, then it is possible that her Mother was Lydia Frank; and her Father was Samuel Frank (see I.G.I. Page 12424) All other descendants of Samuel and Lydia are dependent on
this proposition being correct; and all antecedents of Samuel and Lidia are derived by assumption from the I.G.I.; and this assumption may be incorrect. H.U.SMITH. April 20, 1988.
Letter from "Betty" SPENDER, dated July 7, 1988, indicates that Geoffrey BEARD, Betty's (and my) Great Uncle believed that the Smith Family could trace their origins to Gedney, Lincs., sometime in the
mid-1700's. If this is so then it is further support to the belief that this Family of Franks are connected through Martha, married to John Smith in 1793.
H.U.SMITH from information from "Betty" SPENDER, in her letter of July 7, 1988. ...
NEXT STEPS: 1. Re-check Boyd Index of Marriages for Martha's Marriage to John SMITH (and for Lidia's Marriage)2. Search I.G.I. (Frank Family in Gedney) If there is a Lidia Frank, born to Samuel and Lydia FRANK in either the Parish of Gedney or of Tydd St Mary in LINCS., then this is in all probability the Family of Martha SMITH nee FRANK. Search, May 3, indicates further possibility of this connection. Copies of Frank Details ordered. Await receipt before further entries. When received Search Frank for Samuel and Lydia. H.U.SMITH. Apr.22/May 3, 1988.
All Frank details above Martha are derived from the I.G.I. Copies of I.G.I. received but A-Eliz (J19 and above?) and from Thomas Franke (R19) to end not available. Arrange copies of missing sheets, or re-inspect at Genealogical Society. H.U.SMITH. Aug.2,1989. ...

General Notes: William was a Farmer of Tydd St.Mary, in Lincs. from Geoffrey Stanger, 8/8/1989.
"Betty" Spender's letter of Jul. 30, 1988, mentions the Gravestone of William in Fleet Hargate Baptist Churchyard as follows: William Stanger late of Tydd St.Mary's died April 26th, 1822, in the 57th year of his age. Also: Mary his Wife, of Wisbech, age 95 died on Aug. 15, 1865. Also: William Stanger, M.D. Son, who died Mar. 11th, 1857 in Natal, South Africa. ...
Geoffrey Stanger, in his letter of December 6, 1989 states that William was probably born and lived at Strawberry Hall in Tydd St.Mary. However when his Father died, his Brother John took Strawberry Hall, while William lived at Tydd Gote, a hamlet in the Parish of Tydd St.Mary. (Means 'Sluice')

William married Mary DENT [3829] on 5 Aug 1801 in Parish Church Haugh Lincolnshire England. General Notes: "Betty" SPENDER believes that Mary Dent Smith's (nee Stanger) Mother lived at Wisbech. There may be a connection with "Strawberry Hall", which seems to figure prominently in the "History of the Smiths" H.U.SMITH, from information from "Betty" SPENDER in her letter of July 7, 1988. ...
See Note under Mary's Husband William re: Strawberry Hall.
In an e-Mail from Sandra Boudrou, received in September 2009, she included:

<http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/main/w-gunbyhallestatemonksthorpechapel> He gave to his son, Richard the right of the Lease of the meeting house and grounds in Monksthorpe for the residue of years to come and unexpired to him and his heirs forever.

General Notes: His family was descended from a Dane called Ulf, born about 990 AD, who came to England with Cnut in 1015. Ulf married Astride, the Danish King's daughter, and became a great landowner. In 1030 some of his property between the Humber and the Tees, was presented to the See of York and the transfer marked by the gift of horn made of ivory and gold. 'The Horn of Ulf' is kept to this day in York Minster. J.A.L.Currie. August 1987
.[ This is all wishful thinking! !!! A "real" Descendant of Ulv Thorgilson lives at Strathpine in Queensland.]
Actually Thomas was Christened on the same day as his Daughter Mary, when Thomas was 35 years old. Furthermore, the Dane (Ulf) mentioned above was actually Ulv Thorgilson, who married the Sister of Knut (Canute); and was sent to Denmark (from England) as Regent? to assist Hardicanute rule in his Father's absence. Ulv Thorgilson plotted with the King of Norway, probably one of the Olafs, either Trygvesson of St.Olaf. Canute heard of this and returned to Denmark, where he removed the head of Ulv in Roskilde Cathedral. Following this he presented the lands he had previously given Ulv to the See of York, as stated above. .. H.U.Smith. February 1988.
Thomas was actually an Ironmonger in St. Ives in Huntingdonshire. He was left all the Property owned by his Uncle, John, in St. Ives and Fenstanton. John's Will mentions the fact that the Property in question was situated near the Sheep Market? It also mentions the previous Tenants of the various lots. For further details see Ulph Wills.
